Tech Viral Bill Gates’ nuclear energy company TerraPower has received approval to build a next-generation nuclear reactor in Wyoming. The permit marks the first authorization for a new commercial nuclear power plant in the United States in nearly a decade.
The project will use TerraPower’s advanced “Natrium” reactor design, which relies on liquid sodium instead of water for cooling. The system can produce 345 megawatts of electricity and temporarily boost output to 500 megawatts using integrated energy storage.
Supporters say advanced nuclear technology could help meet growing electricity demand while reducing carbon emissions. Construction is expected to move forward soon, with the reactor potentially becoming operational in the early 2030s.
