World’s Oldest Trappist Monk, 108, Survivor of Communist Persecution, Has Died. Fr. Benedict Chao, the world’s oldest Trappist monk, died on July 31 at Our Lady of Joy Abbey on Lantau Island, Hong Kong, at the age of 108. Born in Hebei, China, in 1918, Chao entered monastic life in 1941 and was ordained a priest in 1949. He belonged to a generation of Chinese Trappists whose monasteries were destroyed during Communist persecution. After fleeing mainland China, Chao and fellow monks lived for a time in Canada and the United States before rebuilding their monastic community in Hong Kong.

Worse than Germany: Cardinal Tarcisio Kikuchi of Tokyo has welcomed the Japanese government's plan to promote "understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity", which was approved on 16 June. The plan involves education and "awareness initiatives" in government, schools, and workplaces, as well as measures to combat "discrimination" against homosexuals. In an interview with UcaNews.com on June 17, Cardinal Kikuchi described the government’s decision as “meaningful”, stating that it had clearly articulated a policy intended to foster a "deeper understanding of sexual minorities". And: "An inclusive community that welcomes everyone is not just an attitude; it is the first step towards building the world that God calls us to create." Mónica Astorga spent almost 40 years as a Discalced Carmelite nun in Argentina and became prioress of her convent in Neuquén. She became internationally known for her work with transvestites because of Pope Francis' encouragement. Astorga meanwhile left the convent and trained in hairdressing. French Film Turns Catholic Faith Into "Joke": The French film Tombé du ciel, due in cinemas on August 12, follows Ilyes, a young Muslim from Roubaix who ends up at a Catholic boarding school in Burgundy, where his unfamiliarity with Catholic beliefs and practices becomes a recurring source of blasphemies about the faith. In one sequence, Ilyes, unable to have breakfast, casually eats unconsecrated hosts from a packet intended for Sunday Mass. “He is eating the whole Body of Christ!” another character exclaims, referring to the Catholic belief in the Eucharist. Ilyes responds by joking that people should not say he has “eaten people.” He is then ordered to go immediately to confession, which becomes another “joke” when he mistakes the confessional for a cupboard.

The Archdiocese of Utrecht has rejected as false rumours that Cardinal Willem Eijk, 73, could have asked Pope Leo XIV during an audience on Monday to accept his early resignation as Archbishop. “These reports are false. He has not offered his resignation,” the archdiocese told the Dutch newspaper Katholiek Nieuwsblad on Wednesday. An archdiocesan spokesman added that there was no basis for such speculation. The audience attracted attention because Eijk has experienced health problems in recent months and didn't attend the consistories in January and June. The archdiocese also provided an update on the cardinal’s health. “It is known that Cardinal Eijk struggled with health problems last winter,” the spokesman said. New Apostolate for the Roman rite in Canada: The Institute of the Good Shepherd (IBP) has established a new apostolate for the traditional Roman Rite in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, with the permission of Archbishop Guy Desrochers. The first Mass was celebrated on July 19. The IBP was founded in 2006 by five former priests of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX/FSSPX). This appears to be its first foundation in Canada.
