The flip side of justice for victims is justice for the accused. Statutes of limitations exist for a reason. Presumption of innocence is a fundamental legal safeguard. The cost of ensuring that the innocent are not condemned is that some criminals get away with their crimes.
This puts a new meaning to the statement, "We can hope Hell is empty." There is no statute of limitations with God. All times and all sins are in the present to Him. That gives us a glimpse of His mercy. He is not forgiving a sin from the distant past, as we perceive it, but a present sin right before His eyes. Neither this priest nor the prelates who have failed to correct Him can be forgiven without sincere repentance and penance. The statute of limitations will not protect them.
